Designing a Cozy Breakfast Nook

Not everyone is a morning person—that would just be far too easy. Waking up to that 6:00 am alarm can be arduous, but it’s something that we all have to do at one point or another. So, how do you make rising early more bearable? Start your mornings off right by enjoying them in a breakfast nook with both form and function. Don’t know how to make the most of your favorite at-home brunch spot? We’ve got you covered with three key tips for carving out the perfect breakfast nook in your kitchen.

Pick the perfect pendant.
No matter how small it may be, make your breakfast nook the focal point of your kitchen by hanging an eye-catching light fixture above your table. Choose a streamlined glass fixture for a more modern kitchen, or compliment distressed cabinetry and a farmhouse sink with a tin warehouse pendant. Providing ample light lets your space do double duty as a reading nook or a homework spot for the kids.

Pile on the textiles.
Keep it comfortable with upholstered benches, window treatments and, of course, plenty of throw pillows while you drink your morning tea. Because breakfast nooks tend to be smaller, they’re a great place to invest in custom upholstery—find a fabric that you love and splurge to have bench cushions made, and then top them off with coordinating throw pillows.

Keep it light and bright.

Take advantage of the morning light and amplify it by choosing sheer draperies for your windows, painting your walls a fresh, light color, and hanging a mirror or two if you have the wall space. There’s nothing like waking up to a cup of coffee and a sunny day! Plus, it will make a smaller space feel more open and inviting.
