It’s mid-November, which means it’s right about time to start decking the halls for the holidays. But, with all the spending you’re probably already doing on things like presents, hosting, and holiday party clothes, it can be hard to justify shelling out more money for decorations you’ll only use for a few short weeks.
Which is why one of our favorite holiday decorating tactics is purchasing items that can be used during more than just the holiday season, so you get more out of your decor investment. The key is to go for styles that subtly hint that it’s the most wonderful time of the year, rather than scream it in your face.
To show you what we mean, we’ve chosen three of our favorite seasonal decorating styles, and paired them with holiday throw pillows that you’ll be able to use long after January 1st.
Traditional holiday decor is red and green and gold all over, and typically rife with snowflake motifs and Santa Clause silhouettes. But, you can still get the look you’re after with a more subtle approach. Forgo the Christmasy motifs for prints like tartan plaids, checks, and solids which still feel seasonally appropriate, but can be incorporated into other spaces in your home once the holidays are over. The two rooms below are perfect examples of how it’s done.
Metallic decor is another classic way to decorate for the holidays. And, given the major trend toward decorating with shades of silver and gold, it’ll be even easier to spread your Christmastime decor throughout your home after the holiday with no one being any the wiser.
No need to wish for snow in order to have a white Christmas. All-white decor feels sophisticated, elegant, and fresh, and since white is the ultimate neutral, you’ll have no problem re-using it throughout your home. The white approach is a natural fit for homes already designed in a neutral palette, but it’s also the most complementary to bright, colorful spaces.
