Oftentimes, the hardest part of decorating a room is figuring out where to start. There are furniture silhouettes to consider, color palettes to pick, and accents to incorporate. In order to create a cohesive, well-designed space and ensure every element of you room works together, it’s essential to choose a jumping off point–or a muse–for your room; the piece that will inform the rest of the design, and be the one thing that every other item will tie back to, style-wise.
Though it may seen counter-intuitive, it’s often decor and accent pieces that can offer the most inspiration. A work of art, an intricate area rug, or a colorful throw pillow you love can often provide more specific cues in terms of style, color, and pattern that a sofa or coffee table can (most often because we tend to lean toward neutral, simpler designs for our larger pieces of furniture, and add flair with the accents).
To demonstrate just how powerful that one perfect piece can be, we’ve put together three different looks, each inspired by a single throw pillow.
The Muse: The Dhiren Geometric Pillow in Mahogany.
This print on this pillow feels both modern and retro at once, while the colors speak to an earthy, almost masculine aesthetic. So we went with midcentury pieces, accented by organic and natural elements and given a pop of color with a wall art and a pair of vases.
The Muse: Cleon Ikat Pillow in Pink
On the opposite end of the design spectrum, this brightly colored ikat pillow screams preppy, feminine, and on trend. Its perfect pairings: accents in equally saturated shades of pink, green, and blue, and a plush neutral sofa and sisal area rug to add balance to all the color.
The Muse: Karston Toile Pillow in Heritage
Classic toile is a mainstay in traditional decorating, but it’s also popular in Chinoiserie style decor. So, elements from both styles were combined in creating this look, which features an oriental rug, bamboo chair and table lamp, and clean-lined sofa and vase to keep the feel contemporary.
